I don’t think it has anything to do with it being a crime. I think it has everything to do with it being a violation of Batman’s own moral code, the thing that separates him from the people he fights to stop.
And in terms of that relationship being stale, new fans of all stripes find a fascination in it each and every year, whether they encounter it in comics or on television or in film or in cartoons. So I think the problem here in this case lies more with you. It’s only natural to want some manner of permanent resolution, but you need to understand that these characters belong to all generations, not just one. After you and I are long gone and turned to dust, Batman will be battling the Joker and entertaining an audience while doing so.
